FOCUS ON VISUALIZATION: An interview with Laura Arns, Associate Director of the Envision Center for Data Perceptualization at Purdue University.

Purdue University’s Envision Center for Data Perceptualization is recognized worldwide as a leader in scientific visualization and human computer interaction. Since opening in April 2004, the Envision Center has relied on the NVIDIA Quadro FX by PNY graphics boards to drive both its large passive stereoscoptic tiled wall display and Flex™ (cave-like) environment. As Associate Director of the Envision Center and Research Scientist at Purdue University, Laura Arns has acquired a good deal of experience and knowledge in visualization and virtual reality. In a recent interview, Laura Arns shared some of her thoughts with PNY.

Q. In your opinion what is the importance of visualization technology today and how does it affect our lives?
In short, visualization technology makes it easier for people to get work done. Humans can process a lot more information through their vision than other means. Research has shown that people work faster and more effectively in a wide variety of fields if they have pictures. Students also learn better when provided with visuals. This is not to say that immersive visualization is necessary for absolutely every task, but nearly every field has some area that might benefit from it. At the Envision Center, we have worked on projects that are easy to associate with visualization – chemistry and biology for example. But we have also worked with many other groups such as the communications department, and the dance department.

Q. What role has the advancement of graphics technology, like the framelock capable NVIDIA Quadro FX 3000 G by PNY graphics board and the Quadro Plex played in improving immersive visualization tools such as the FLEX environment used at the Envision Center?
Ten years ago most graphics work was being done on large, proprietary and expensive systems by just a few people. Now we can drive a whole CAVE with just a couple of PCs using the NVIDIA Quadro FX by PNY genlock/framelock enabled graphics boards.

Q. When you decided to upgrade your FLEX system, why did you choose the NVIDIA Quadro Plex?
We had a cluster driving the Flex, using NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500G by PNY graphics boards, so our performance was already quite good. We decided to get a Quadro Plex simply because it would allow us to drive the Flex from a single PC, eliminating the hassles that are involved with developing and running on a cluster. We will still have a cluster that also drives the Flex, as that has advantages in some situations, but we will primarily use the Quadro Plex for its simplicity. It retains all the original features that were important to us, such as genlock.

Q. What are some of the typical applications that the FLEX system has been used for since it became operational in April 2004?
There’s so many that it might be easier for you to just see this page. If you experience difficulties loading this page cut and paste the url https://www.envision.purdue.edu/projects_details.html into your web browser.
